Making a proper fist in karate is one of the best ways of protecting your hand.

Here are step-by-step instructions for making a fist. I’ve included a video version of these instructions at the end of this article.

Start by curling your fingers into your palm, while keeping your thumb on the outside. Do not tuck your thumb inside your palm!

Next you’re going to bend your thumb, and place it over the first two fingers of your fist.

Make sure to squeeze your fist firmly. No donut holes!

For punching, strike your target with the front of the first two knuckles.

And that’s it! Now you know how to make a proper fist. 🙂
