You want to be great at martial arts, but all you see now is the gap between where you want to be and where you are now. And that gap can be incredibly discouraging, as you realize how long and difficult that path will be.

Instead of focusing on the end of that path, focus on WHO you have to be in order to get there.

That great martial artist you imagine: what is their daily life like? What behaviours do they practise consistently? How do they handle problems and setbacks?

Imagine that great martial artist. That Sensei. That Coach. That athlete. Picture them in your mind. And then ask yourself: what does this person do? What skills do they have? What do they do every single day to build those skills?

And then break those daily activities down into something small and realistic that YOU—even where you’re at right now—can do today. A 5-minute action version of what you imagine this great martial artist does every single day, without fail.

And yes, that person is impressive and amazing, and they’ve put in a lot of work over a very long time. But they didn’t start anywhere close to where they are now. They started at the beginning of that path too.

Focus on the identity of that person you want to become. And then build the habits and skills required to get there.
